New Family History

Last weekend I received the following email message:

"Hi Robert,Found your name on the web with your new son - congratulations!Wondering if you are the son of Robert Russel Pierce b. 1934 and grandson of Milo Lucius Pierce Jr.? If so, drop me a note, we are related, and I've done a load of genealogy on the Pierce family.Carole (Pierce) GardnerSanta Fe, NM"

I am, in fact, the son of Robert Russel Pierce b. 1934 and grandson of Milo Lucius Pierce Jr., so I returned her message.

Turns out Carole HAS done a load of geneology on the Pierce family. Almost too much to fathom. I still have not read much of what she has sent me. But here here is the nut of it all. Turns out there are a lot of Pierces who trace their lineage back to Captain Michael Pierce, b. 1615, of Massachussetts. I now have my Pierce family line back that far. Carole and I share a great-great-grandfather, Hollom Pierce. I'm hoping that Carole will send me all the information she has. It is great to have your family history dumped on your lap.

Actually, I don't know why it has taken so long. There are websites up that show my family lineage, including relatives my parents have known about for a long time. Anyway, good news.

If I get some permission, I'll post some of the research that Carole has done.

House Shopping

We took a walk with little guy today and had lunch at the deli on 20th Street. There were a few houses on the north slope of Potrero Hill open for sale, so we took a look. We found one on Arkansas that is perfect, if a too pricey, for us. Anyone reading this is welcome to pitch in a little (or a lot of) dough to help us get into a family starter. Nigerian Petroleum Ministers need not contact us.

Doctor's Visit

Last week baby Robert went to the doctor for a one month checkup.  All went well.  He has gained over 2 pounds since birth  and is, according to the doctor, "athletic."   Also according to the doctor, he will be 5 foot 10 inches tall when he grows up.  Exactly his father's height.  Unfortunately, baby's career as an ultimate cage fighter seems to be in jeopardy.  I told the doctor I would gladly trade 10-20 IQ points for a couple inches.  We'll see.

Changes

With a child comes change. New cares, new concerns. A new relationship with one's spouse. A new appreciation for family and for nuturing those who need your love. A new way of life.

At the Pierce home, with the arrival of Robert III, a new dawn has arisen. Where once could be found inedible foods like kale and brown rice, one will now see delightful and nutritious foods, like chocolate syrups and Cheezits. Gone are frozen soup stocks and fish. They've made way for those common and hearty foods upon which children are reared and women-folk recover from their labors.

Robert II has been promoted!

While on short leave from his job as Director and Associate General Counsel, Adobe Systems Incorporated, Robert R. Pierce, Jr. has taken a position at Pierce Family Industries as Senior Vice President of Publicity, Household Chores and Handicrafts. In taking this role at Pierce Family, Robert brings exactly 15 minutes of household experience with him, which he obtained when, once, in 1982, he made his own bed. In this newly created position, Mr. Pierce will lead a team of one in executing against the least important elements of the company's three year plan. "In today's dynamic environment, it's extremely important that we have someone at Pierce Family Industries that can manage our web presence. With Robert we get someone with that expertise. We also get a leader who can haul bagloads of dirty diapers up and down 6 flights of stairs." said Pierce Family CEO, Mira Schwirtz. One of the first projects Robert will tackle in his new role is to root out the crud in the dish washer drain accumulated there after misuse and inattention by the former Head of Chores. "I'll do it as soon as I get a chance, but first you should take a look at my origami mobile," said Mr. Pierce.

Visit to Santa Rosa

For Robert III's second week birthday celebration we took a drive out to Santa Rosa to see grandparents Schwirtz. As to be expected, John and Meredith were happy to see the little guy. The first time since seeing him at UCSF after the delivery. Since we are having one of those false spring weeks in the bay area, all the grass was green and the fruit blossoms were out in full force. We had some soup for lunch, watched the baby, ate some ice cream, watched the baby, ate some Mexican food, watched the baby, watched some television, then watched the baby. I can see where this is going.

We brought back some great peach blossoms for the living room.

Walk in the Park

Mira has been recuperating quite well, I would say.  After a week and a half she is starting to want to get out of the house.  Yesterday my brother Mike, Wendy, Diego and Maya came for a visit.  Apparently Maya really wanted to see Robert III.  Wendy was kind enough to bring us a lasagna.  After much discussion and planning, we went out for dinner at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in the Mission.  That was it for the kids.  They nearly fell asleep at the table and it was time to go home at about 7 pm. 

Today we carried Robert III to the Esprit park down the street.  Mira was chagrin to meet a woman walking her 7 day old baby.  At 10 days old, Robert III is already an old man, it seems, in the Potrero Hill baby show-off ritual.
